serkan & cecilia

Serkan Gokcesu and Cecilia Garcia

Many within the inner circles of Argentine Tango have been wondering how it will turn out to be, this new constellation made up of a hot Turkish-Argentinean melting pot. They met on the floors of Buenos Aires milongas and felt an instant and unique connection, first in the dance and later in the attraction that grew between them as being lovers. Now they have finally taken the decision to transform a love affair into a professional constellation, working together with tango. It may sound as the most obvious step to take, but taking into consideration that they both on each part have had successful careers working in other constellations, it takes some courage to take the leap into the unknown.
Serkan is renowned for the work he made together with Özhan Araz, his Turkish childhood friend and later dance partner. Two young men that for close to eight years were working and touring together as professional tango teachers and performers at some of the biggest tango festivals in the world, as well as working with dance choreography for television and cinema at home in Turkey. Appreciated for an innovative teaching method, based on the fact that as being two men they shared the dancing roles equally, and as a result had acquired a very profound understanding of the dance. An understanding that usually comes with a respectful amount of years dancing, but something that they obtained in the scope of only a few years. Both coming from the athlete world, being semi-professional sportsmen, helped them in focusing, both physically and mentally, to always reach higher levels, constantly developing.
Cecilia has an impressive dancing background covering everything from traditional argentine folk dance, contemporary dance, contact, aerial, jazz, to tango. She also has a teaching degree for the piano. Maybe this combination can explain her outstanding musical and physical expression, close to being unchallenged by anyone in the competition. Or maybe it can be explained simply by raw talent and gift. However, her dancing style cannot be easily explained, it has to be experienced live. If you have seen her at a performance, you know. If not, you are lucky – you can still look forward to seeing her for the first time. She is already well travelled, starting touring at the age of sixteen when she performed in a group working in Italy and France. Later she has been touring worldwide with various prominent characters of the Argentine tango scene. Not only has she been working as a performer, she has also a genuine experience as a tango teacher, Buenos Aires being her home base.
To mix these two talented dancers can only have one outcome: something extraordinary. While many tango couples argue that they represent something unique, this constellation does not have to argue this case. Just looking at their separate backgrounds you know that the end result of the chemical reaction will not be the ordinary, it will be explosive. Their ambition is high. They want to take tango to a new level, both personally as well as within the tango community. And they know that it will take time. Using their diverse experiences of the dance they want to erase the stereotypes of leader and follower. The want something more intuitive, to see the tango as being a solid trio playing together: the music being the conductor and leading voice, and the couple being the interpreters and accompanying instruments. But the couple does not only interpret the music, but also each other, listening to what the other has to suggest and in turn suggest something back. No defined leader nor follower, instead a constant flow of reaction, action and contra reaction. The base is still tango, but the interpretation and the expression are new every time.

homer & cristina

Homer and Cristina started their tango obsession long before the met each other. Each with over 11 years of experience emphasizing a fusion of social tango ideologies, via the 'one tango' philosophy. As teachers they are committed to creating a positive class environment and try to reduce barriers that may inhibit students from really finding their own dance! Small epiphanies can & do occur in their students all the time... It has been said, on more than one occasion, that few dancing couples improvise with such skill, personality, and fluidity of movement. Married since May 2002 Homer & Cristina continue to explore deeper facets of their relationship to each other and to tango.

Homer is also a founding member of the non-profit Project Tango organization whose biggest local projects include the weekly CELLspace alternative milonga and the annual Tango Exchange. His newest obsession is the double bass! He plays with a ‘student’ tango band called Los Bandacticos and hosts free music jams (locally and on the road).

Cristina is currently recovering from a life altering kidney disease and, beyond her regular ‘tango functions’, is a student of Yoga and Pilates and spends her off-time reading.

adam & ciko

Adam Hoopengardner excels in many styles of tango. His philosophy of tango is centered on the energy one feels from one's partner, and believes this should inspire the style and movement of the dance. He is confident dancing in open or close embrace and is cherished by followers for his comfortable, clear lead, his creativity, and inspiring musicality. When teaching he is able to transmit his mastery of the complex concepts of tango while retaining his innate humor and humility. He bases his classes on the abilities of his students and is able to help them expand their skill and understanding of the dance.
Adam has worked across the US, Canada, Germany, and Poland teaching workshops and at festivals often returning more than once. He is based in New York and Berlin. He has performed and worked with some of todays leading ladies of tango including, Cigdem Tanik, Brigitta Winkler, Rebecca Shulman, and Silvina Vals.

Ciko's motivation to pursue tango has been the connection to another soul & body, as well as her own, through a music that inspires her. During her visits to Buenos Aires she focused solely in the dance in its original grounds exploring and studying both traditional and nuevo tango roots which developed the Argentine quality in her dance. She embraced both open and close embrace which allowed the ability to move fluidly between the two and be more dynamic and versatile. Her technique gives her a non-restrictive connection with various dancers. Her dance is defined by its sensuality, creative playfulness, musicality and elasticity.
She emphasizes the importance of a good technique with a comfortable, musical walk over complicated moves. Her goal as a teacher is to bring her students’ personality out in their dance by teaching them the music and the concept of countless possibilities the dance offers. She cannot over emphasize the value of being an active follower which makes the dance much more interactive and fun. She has worked across US and Canada teaching workshops and at festivals. Has worked and performed with powerful leaders such as Adam Hoopengardner, Felipe Martinez, Robin Thomas, Evan Griffiths and Daniel Tuero.

burak ozkosem

El Turco is recognized for his creative and expressive style and his bold and sensitive interpretations of both traditional tango music and the eclectic, non-traditional music that he incorporates into his djing and instructional repertoire. He is a popular and attentive teacher. His current focus is to develop Tango Nuevo analysis methods and to understand and teach the essence of Argentine Tango more effectively to general public audience.

Though he is considered a virtuoso of "Tango Nuevo", in his dancing Burak is not adding anything new or "modern" to Tango. Every movement he uses is taken strictly from the Tango vocabulary. He respects the music and responds in the traditional places; his syncopa, or rhythm, is flawless. What he does is deconstruct the usual tango marcado (marking) and reconstruct it in his own surprising way. BurakÂ’s nontraditional use of the vocabulary prompts curiosity, and inspiration for other dancers.

He is the Artistic Director of prestigious Chicago Tango Week, and the co-founder of ARTango Center in Chicago.

His artistic maturity is now informing his tango. Drawing from these diverse and creative explorations he generously shares his knowledge with students of every level. With a keen grasp of these basic elements the dance partners can then find the ease and freedom to bring complexity to their floorcraft and develop their improvisational skills. Bulent likes to encourage in his students, the sensitivity and confidence needed to experiment with tango. The dance becomes more than its steps. The dance becomes creative communication. jennifer olsen

Starting her tango career in Portland (OR), tango has now taken Jennifer all over the world: to Europe (where she has taught in England), to Argentina and Uruguay (where she has been invited to perform at several milongas), and throughout the United States and Canada (where she has taught and performed extensively).

Arguably without a home, Jennifer continues to travel (and live out of her suitcase) year-round. She has taught at festivals and given workshops around the world including Montevideo, Uruguay; London, England; Toronto, Canada; Montreal, Canada; Portland, OR; Seattle, WA; Denver, CO; New York, NY; Washington D.C.; Atlanta, GA; Boston, MA; Princeton, NJ (at Princeton University); New Haven, CT (at Yale University); and St. Louis, MO.

Jennifer's dance is characterized by her desire to strive for versatility. Since tango is a social dance, she believes it is integral to master not only close and open embrace, but also everything in-between. Furthermore, after having a connected and comfortable embrace, nothing is more important to Jennifer than the music. This is transmitted in her teaching, as she approaches every class with a strong command over the music.

michel auzat

DJ since 1998, Michel first began to dance tango in April 1993. He owns some 1,700 tango CDs - about 27,000 tracks. Michel has developed a remastering technique for the Golden Age period of tango (1927-1944). He specializes in the orchestras of the 1950’s and today’s orchestras that are tanguable.

He began as a DJ in January 1998 at la Tangueria on Saint-Laurent Street. He then acted as DJ on Sunday nights at the Academy from Novembre 1998 to August 2009, as well as on Saturday nights at Royal Tango from July 2004 to June 2009.

He is accustomed DJing in major events. In June 2000, Michel was the guest DJ in Ithaca, New York, where Miguel Zotto was the guest of honour. He also animated major events in Boston – at ten different occasions – from 2000 to 2002, as well as in Montreal and Quebec City.

In partnership with Joseph Vignalou, Michel conceived Montreal’s monthly Grand Bal in Septembre 2009. Finally, since Octobre 2009, he DJs at Café de Lima’s Thurday milongas.

As tango is an improvised dance, Michel believes that the music played should also be improvised. Nothing is prepared in advance. The choice of music is done on the spot according to the dancers and the mood and energy on the dance floor.
